As a user, you should not be concerned about this mode. However, if you start doing Insert mode editing, then remember that if you move beyond the line that the `$' sign is in, Replace will get confused, and not remove the `$' after you are done. Otherwise you can use nice Emacs features like dynamic abbreviations. See section `Dynamic Abbreviations' in The GNU Emacs Manual, for details.
