Internship at Kono lab [Last update by Tian April 18th]

  1. An update on June 8th,
    • For SHG project, Rui did measurements at 1800 nm again with now optimized geometry but didn't see any signal. He will turn signal into 900 nm now.
    • For (11,10) CNT project, I am making the sample for testing
  1. An update on June 1st,
    • If the project is to be finished it will be SHG of enantiomer enriched (11,-5) samples and Aharonov-Bohm effect,
      • For SHG project, Rui did a measurement at 1800 nm but didn't observed any signal, we will change the incident wavelength to 1000 nm (as of E11 of (6,5) CNT 1.25 eV)
      • For the Aharonov-Bohm effect, we can help modify the program left by Daria-san to incorporate the AB effect to help predict the case for (11,10) CNTs,
      • We will also need to prepare the sample for the measurement, we would need a special layout to measure AB effect on CNT with RAMBO at Kono-lab.
  1. May 15th,
    • I discussed with Kono-sensei and following is the current status.
      • Aharonov-Bohm effect will cause the subband of SWCNT to change, we want to detect such change of subband via energy absorbed by intraband surface plasmon, this is what Kono-sensei is calling magneto-plasmon.
      • For SHG project, Kono-sensei is more interested in: if we do SHG with light of energy at E11, it will generate exciton. How will it change the SHG signal?
  1. April 27th, a windup of SHG calculation.
    • We will make the assumption that we already had the correct QE output filed for Yambo calculation, see memo of April 14th.
      • We will need to convert QE output file to Yambo input file via p2y executable.
      • In QE calculation file, go to /tmp/*.save (* is the name of the project) folder, use /home/students/nguyen/opt/yambo-5.0.4/bin/p2y, this will generate a SAVE folder
      • For simplicity, go to the main folder of the QE, creat a shg folder, copy /tmp/*.save/SAVE folder in shg/ folder
      • In the SAVE folder, use the command home/students/nguyen/opt/yambo-5.0.4/bin/yambo_nl -i -V RL -F setup.in this will generate a setup.in folder.
      • Edit the setup.in file, used the command home/students/nguyen/opt/yambo-5.0.4/bin/yambo_nl -F setup.in this will setup the yambo calculation
      • Use command home/students/nguyen/opt/yambo-5.0.4/bin/ypp -y, this actin creates a ypp input file ypp.in
      • edit ypp.in file, change the electric field as need, remember to remove the & before the RmTimeRev
  1. April 24th, Discuss with Nguyen-san on how to make the correct Yambo input file
    • Error encountered with the following error message,
      • [ERROR] STOP signal received while in[04] Dipoles // [ERROR] Error search for G=G1-G2 !!
    • Solution: find the following line in the setup.in file and comment it
      • MaxGvecs= *** RL # [INI] Max number of G-vectors planned to use
  1. April 18th, making the plan for SHG measurement.
    • Kono-sensei urge me to make the plan for the measurement of the SHG, I think we can do the following measurement.
      • Measure the SHG signal with linear incident light that is polarized in the direction parallel to CNT, as a function of the incident light wavelength, this result will be compared with the calculated χ(2)_xyz/yzx/xzy,
      • Measure the SHG signal, with linear incident light, as a function of incident light intensity. The result can be compared with the calculated result of the SHG photon count.
      • Measure the SHG signal, for a fixed incident light wavelength, as a function of the angle between the polarization of the incident light and that of CNT axis. This result will be compared with the calculation result.
      • Measure the SHG signal, for a fixed incident light wavelength, of left-handed and right-handed polarized light. Compare this result with the calculation result.
  1. April 14th, discussion with Nguyen-san:
    • Tian was trying to run p2y with Tian's account, but Yambo needs Fortran library to run.
    • To solve this problem, one solution is to use the following command: source /opt/intel/oneapi/setvars.sh
  1. April 6th
    • Discussion with Hanyu-sensei and Kono-sensei about SHG:
    • Kono-sensei is concerned about whether the energy of the source light is larger than E11 of the CNT and causing an exciton.
    • Hanyu-sensei and Kono-sensei are interested in discussing the effect of CD when doing SHG: 1. with enantiomer enriched CNT, CD becomes a reality, CD may compete with SHG, 2. circular SHG, we can incite circular polarized source light on CNT, would the SHG signal be circular polarized?
    • Hanyu-sensei asked me to put out the framework of the SHG paper, write the theoretical part and predict what interesting thing we should measure, check the BCC email for detail.
  1. April 1st
    • Monthly group meeting
    • Safety presentation on the basic rules in Kono lab.
    • Presentation of the theoretical discussion on SHG of CNT: Kono-sensei would like to know the χ(2) of (11,-5) CNT, I am calculating it.
    • Question about the effect of the diameter(length?) of CNT on the SHG signal was raised.

  1. March 21st
    • Discussion with Andrey, we have the following issues on the SHG:
    • 1. The measurement is to be conducted by peoples from Hanyu Zhu lab, as his labs has the ability to measure the SHG. However, he and people in his lab are very busy. And angle-dependent measurement of SHG is hard to configure. More data on the existing measurement (I_shg to I measurement provided earlier by Andrey) would also take time. We need to prove that what we are doing is interesting and never done before for them willing to do our measurement. We need to show some new physics in this project if we are to ask them to do a lot of measurements. People in Kono-group doesn't measure SHG themselves.
    • 2. Andrey suggested this project because he thought it would be an easy one. He was expecting the paper to be published with only an extended version of existing data, with the gest being that SHG of (11,-5) SNT was measured. This project doesn't have a high priority to him as he wasn't expecting new physics from the results. He was expecting us to finish the paper within this month and move on to the interband surface plasmon project which is more interesting to him.
  1. March 14th
    • Reading paper on SHG.
    • Doing calculation on E field, result will be sent later today.
    • The referee's opinion to our edge plasmon/spin current paper has came.
  1. March 13th
    • The loglog plot of SHG datas provided by Andrey - Detailed plot was requested in the email. Andrey didn't provided me with more data, I will ask him if I had a chance. Kono is currently in Japan(return in 23th), and Andrey is currently having APS meeting (returning 21st), we should use this time to sort out our the problems on (11,-5) CNTs. If possible, I should train myself on SHG of (11,-5) SWCNTs and give out the prediction of χ(2) and absoption of (11,-5) so we can start writing the paper once they return.
  2. March 11th
    • Short discussion with Andrey, his opinion is as follows:
    • The (11,-5) SWCNT sample was synthesized in Kono-group. Kono-sensei, Andrey and Manu believed the SHG of the (11,-5) sample was never measured before. They can send the sample to Hanyu Zhu-Sensei's group, where they can measure SHG of the sample. IF the SHG of (11,-5) SWCNT is measured in published paper, they can measure the SHG of enantimoer enriced/aligned (11,-5) CNT. We can help the measurement by providing theretical prediction, we can also help check if there are paper published on (11,-5) SWCNT.
    • Thank you. Probably there is no (11,-5) sample since enatiomer separation of (6,5) and (11, -5) pairs is not easy. Do you know (n,m) and (n+m, -m)) are enantiomer pairs? Can you derive this formula? A enantiomer pair is connected by mirror operation with a mirror parallel to nanotube axis. Please try to obtain this formula. You did not show log-log plot yet.
    • Additional Response: Kono-sensei specifically mentioned enantimoer enriched (11,-5) SWCNTs. Plot provided by Andrey also have (11,-5) in the title. They may have some ways to conduct enantiomer enrichment on (11,-5) SWCNTs. I will find a time to derive the formula of chiral indices of CNTs and the relation between (n,m) and (n+m,-m) CNTs.
  1. March 10th, Short analysis of three papers sent by Andrey.
    • Guo, G. Y., et al. Physical Review B 69.20 (2004): 205416. In this paper, an ab-initio calculation of optical, electronic and structural properties of CNT was done by using VASP package. One of the results is that: the second-order susceptibility: χ^(2)_xyz and χ^(2)_yzx of small diameter chiral carbon nanotubes have large absolute value, compared with GaAs. Paper suggest chiral CNT with small diameter are good candidates for SHG.
    • Su, Hui Min, et al. Physical Review B 77.12 (2008): 125428. In this paper, SWCNT samples was prepared, ratio of mix, zigzag(5,0):armchair(3,3):chiral(4,2)=5:4:1. The samples are aligned and SHG signals was detected. The signal power was well fitted to a quadruple function, proving the signal to be the result of a second order nonlinear process.
    • Huttunen, M. J., et al. New Journal of Physics 15.8 (2013): 083043. In this paper, individual (42,1) SWCNTs was separated and was hold between slits on a Si3N4 membrane. The sample was then observed through SHG imaging and TEM imaging. Stong signals was observed in SHG imaging. Huttuen et al. proceeds to conduct SHG imaging on CNT samples with random chirality, most of the chiral samples exhibit strong SHG signals.
    • Some Questions: How does SHG imaging function? SHG signal of specific chirality seems to require specific incident light energy and polarization angle.
    • The answer is No. When B is parallel to nanotube axis, since Lorentz force acts in the direction perpendicular to cylindrical plane. Thus there is no change in the equation of motion for an electron on the CNT surface. On the other hand, the electron feels so called Ahalonov Bohm (AB) phase, which modifies the energy separation E_ij. This phenomena can be observed by alligned CNT with a huge magnetic field (100T).
  1. March 9th,
    • Read the paper on SHG and magneto-plasmon. Question: Is this edge magnetoplasmon in the paper same as magnetoplasmon mention by Kono-sensei, which seems appear on nanotube?
    • The answer is No. When B is parallel to nanotube axis, since Lorentz force acts in the direction perpendicular to cylindrical plane. Thus there is no change in the equation of motion for an electron on the CNT surface. On the other hand, the electron feels so called Ahalonov Bohm (AB) phase, which modifies the energy separation E_ij. This phenomena can be observed by alligned CNT with a huge magnetic field (100T).
    • Additional Questions: Does this means no cylindrical magnetoplasmon on CNT? Kono-sensei specifically mentioned a possible (11,10) intersubband mangneto-plasmon, which he connect it with intersubband plasmon in a light cavity. Would a magnetic field perpendicular to CNT in a cavity generate magneto-palsmon? We will have discussion with Andrey and Kono-sensei to confirm about this.
  1. March 7th,
    • Calculated detailed results and angle dependent results on absorption spectra of (11, 10) Graphene, will send to Kono-sensei and all later today(after printed it).
    • Reading papers on the SHG.
  1. March 5th,
    • Project starts on the SHG, Andrey send in paper and results for me to read. I am learning what they are doing. If possible I want to have a discussion on this matter with Nguyen-san and Saito-sensei.
    • Let us discuss on Tuesday 6:30pm, read the paper and explain us.

    1. Discussed with Kono-sensei, Andrey and Manu, i can pick following researches.
      1. Second/higher order harmonic generation of molecule-inserted (6,5) SWCNT, enantinomer enriched. The data is enough that I can write a paper once I understand the story, IF im desparate to write a paper. Second harmonic generation molecule-inserted (6,5) SWCNTs.
      • What is your contribution on this paper? Nguyen-san can calculate second harmonic generation (SHG). What is the molecule?
      • "You will write the paper"-Said Andrey. I don't recall them metioning specific molecules. I will ask Andrey and Kono-sensei.

  1. (11,10) intersubband plasmon, intersubband magneto-plasmon and ISB plasmon polarton in a cavity.
